response. Adam was created as a perfect human adult and thus acquired Segula. It was passed down one person at a time until all of Ya'akov's sons received it and gave it to all of Israel. Each generation naturally had the potential for Segula, but needed to work in order to acquire it. When Israel sinned with the Golden Calf, they did not forsake Hashem and lose Segula. Rather, they simply were lacking enough faith to see God without an image; thus, they created a symbol to focus upon. The calf represents Hashem caring for everything that we do in this world and therefore we must take responsibility to behave with this in mind.
